Mission Statement

How important is your home to you? We consider our home our sanctuary. It is where we share our joys and soothe our sorrows. It is hard to imagine what it would be like to not have a home to return to every night.

We feel strongly that homelessness is a tragedy. But, we also believe that it is a situation that can be cured. However, a home requires an income, an income requires a job and a job requires job skills. There are many homeless people who are ready to become independent but don’t have the jobs skills necessary to take that first step away from homelessness.

Urban Samaritan, Inc. is a nonprofit organization (a 501 (c) 3 company incorporated in New York City) that benefits the homeless by providing the job skills and paid work necessary to take that first step toward having a home. Our current project is to take used advertising banners from museums and cultural institutions and make them into products such as tote bags that can then be sold in the gift shop of the museum that donated the banner or through another retailer. We partner with a sewing workshop for homeless and at-risk people that meets in the basement of a Manhattan church.
